Zaki Aslan

Keynote Topic From Restoration to Resilience: Respect as a Foundation for Living Heritage

Zaki Aslan is an architect, planner, and cultural heritage specialist with more than three decades of global experience in heritage conservation, management, policy, and education.

He currently serves as Advisor for Cultural Heritage at the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi, where he contributes to strategic initiatives related to heritage policy, historic environments, institutional development, professional education, international cooperation, and integrated management of cultural heritage.

Previously, Dr. Aslan spent two decades with ICCROM, where he led programmes for the Arab region and served as the founding Director of the ICCROM Regional Centre in Sharjah.

Throughout his career, he has worked closely with governments, international organisations, academic institutions, and local communities, focusing on community-centred conservation, traditional knowledge, cultural diversity, sustainable development, and long-term stewardship.

About the Keynote

What does it mean to respect heritage in a time of accelerating environmental, social and cultural change?

This keynote proposes a progression from restoration to recovery, resilience and ultimately regeneration, arguing that respect must be the foundation of this shift.

Thabo Manetsi

Dr Thabo Manetsi is currently appointed as the CEO of the National Heritage Council based in Pretoria and has recently been elected as Chairperson of ICOMOS-SA.

He has extensive experience in Government policy formulation, strategy development and management in the heritage and tourism sectors, domestically and internationally.

Previously, he held senior management positions at the South African Heritage Resources Agency (SAHRA) and the National Heritage Council of South Africa.

He holds a PhD Degree in African Studies (heritage resources management) from the University of Cape Town, South Africa.

He continues to serve as an expert panellist at UNESCO, IUCN, ICCROM and ICOMOS International. His works are published on various platforms in academia and Government journals.

Tino Mager

Tino Mager is Associate Professor of the History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism at the University of Groningen, and President of ICOMOS Germany.

Previously, he worked at the Faculty of Architecture and Built Environment at Delft University of Technology, was a fellow of the Leibniz Association and the University of Queensland.

Tino studied media technology in Leipzig and art history and communication science in Berlin, Barcelona and Tokyo.

He has been awarded grants from, among others, the Leibniz Association, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the University of Queensland, and the Dutch Research Council.

Antonio Arantes

Antonio Arantes is an anthropologist and Emeritus Professor at the State University of Campinas (Unicamp), Brazil. He has served as President of IPHAN, Brazil's national heritage institute, and has extensive experience in cultural heritage policies.

He has served as President of the Brazilian Association of Anthropology, General Secretary of the Latin American Anthropological Association, and Vice-President of the ICOMOS International Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage.

He has led several research projects and published books, chapters, articles and technical reports on cultural heritage policies in contemporary social experience and related subjects.

His expertise in heritage and public policy draws on both the management of governmental heritage institutions and consultancy for non-governmental, governmental and multilateral organizations, including UNESCO and WIPO.

He contributed to the drafting of UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage Convention from 2000 onwards, taking part in several expert meetings, and after its adoption in 2003 spoke at conferences promoting its ratification in the Asia-Pacific region.

He designed the methodology of the Brazilian Inventory of Cultural References and has supported capacity-building on Intangible Cultural Heritage inventories in Mozambique and Madagascar.

Living Heritage: Global in Service of the Local

Douglas C. Comer, Ph.D., is Immediate Past President of the United States National Committee of ICOMOS and Past Vice-President of the ICOMOS Advisory Committee.

He served as Co-President of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Archaeological Heritage Management from 2008 to 2017, and has been a member of the ICOMOS World Heritage Panel three times.

A Fellow by Courtesy at Johns Hopkins University, he leads a NASA Interdisciplinary Science team applying satellite and aerial remote sensing technologies at World Heritage Sites.

He is founder and President of CSRM Foundation, which plans for the management and protection of cultural and natural heritage sites.
