ICOMOS Malaysia forms part of the ICOMOS international network of multi-disciplinary professionals involved in the conservation of tangible and intangible heritage. It is an independent organization that acts as a national and international link between public authorities, institutions, and individuals involved in the study and conservation of all places of cultural heritage significance. At the national level, the Committee serves as a forum for discussion and information exchange, both nationally and internationally, on matters of doctrine and on technical, legal, and administrative practices affecting the conservation, restoration, rehabilitation, and enhancement of monuments, groups of buildings, and sites. The ICOMOS Malaysia National Committee represents ICOMOS' interests at the national level and our members' views within the international network. At present, our membership has expanded to 161 professionals across the country, made up of government servants, academicians, and private practitioners. We engage our members in national and regional initiatives.
The Malaysian National Committee of the International Council of Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS Malaysia) would like to propose Kuching, Sarawak, Borneo as the destination for the ICOMOS Triennial General Assembly in 2026. This is the first time a region within the mysterious Borneo archipelago has been proposed to host this prestigious assembly.
With the theme "Sarawak-Borneo's Living Heritage: (R)espect (E)nhance (A)ccept (L)egacy", the assembly will highlight Sarawak's heritage while providing delegates opportunities to exchange knowledge and implement successfully adopted practices that preserve local heritage and natural resources. These in turn will create long-term ecosystems that incentivize responsible behaviours from businesses and travellers, foster equitable local economic development, monitor progress and impact scientifically, while calibrating services and governance practices to ensure the resilience and longevity of the people, places and processes that will safeguard the Living Heritage of all world-class destinations for years to come.
In order to achieve the objectives connected to the theme, the assembly programme will focus on FIVE (5) key principles known as the 5Ps (People, Planet, Prosperity, Peace, Partnerships), which are interconnected by design and aligned to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs).
Kuching, Sarawak-Borneo, Malaysia is the ideal destination to host the Triennial General Assembly in 2026 because it is a living embodiment of how the 5Ps are already working simultaneously to weave a compelling heritage narrative.
ICOMOS Malaysia, in articulating these five principles, seeks to demonstrate that with adequate dialogue, governance and multi-disciplinary collaboration, intangible elements can be an effective vehicle for biodiversity and overall heritage conservation, targeted climate action, and the achievement of many of the UNSDGs.
ICOMOS Malaysia hopes to attract some 2,000 delegates from across the globe, representing conservators, archaeologists, anthropologists, historians, urban planners, architects, engineers, journalists, academia and others with strong mutual interest in cultural and natural heritage conservation.
The knowledge and resources transmitted through cultural heritage to achieve the well-being of PEOPLE
